Introducing Pointz Plus

Why we’re launching a subscription at Pointz

Dear Pointz Community, 

Starting today, we are excited to be introducing a paid subscription to Pointz called Pointz Plus. We're thrilled about the launch as the new services are designed to take your experience with us to the next level. As two women founders in both the tech and bicycling industries, we've poured our hearts into creating an app that empowers and supports people who bike. We want to give you some insight into our decision to launch Pointz Plus. Here's why we're doing it. 

We started Pointz when we were undergrads and have spent the past 2.5 years improving the app. Our work consists of gathering better data, iterating on our routing service, developing new features, and listening to your feedback. Since our inception, we've engaged in over 1000 calls with our amazing community, and we want you to know that your voices are heard, valued, and appreciated. Every suggestion you've shared has helped shape Pointz into what it is today. We absolutely love doing this work and serving you. However, each new iteration takes time and resources. 

We understand that introducing a subscription might come as a surprise, especially after offering many features for free for so long. However, as much as we've resisted monetization efforts, we recognize the necessity of ensuring our long-term sustainability. We've chosen this path because we refuse to monetize ‘you’ - we don’t want to compromise your privacy or bombard you with ads. Your trust and satisfaction remain our top priorities.

We’d like to share with you a couple of the main additions. The first is more robust route planning. With our new customizations, you can specify what type of bike you ride, your preferences for hills and shortcuts, your average speed for more accurate ETAs, and if you have an e-bike, get an estimation of the amount of battery you’ll use on a route. The other service we’re excited to be offering is 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. We’ve partnered up with a roadside assistance provider that operates everywhere throughout the United States. If you break down and need a lift back to your house or bike shop, simply call our partner and they will give you and your bike a ride.

With Pointz Plus, some existing features will become part of the subscription package, such as live turn-by-turn navigation, while others will be limited like the number of searches allowed per week. Other features like the map’s stress-level colors, crowdsourcing capabilities, and recording functionality have been and always will remain free. Here’s a chart that shows which features will be free and which are part of Pointz Plus.
